Vertical Zones of the Pitch

Vertical zones of the pitch, image from soccer performance playbook by Jay Carney www.practice90.com

Most goals from gold zone, most effective assists from red zone within 18 yard box which is our target area.

Attacking Using Wide Areas

What we are looking for

This clip demonstrates well the kind of thing we need to do to create space in the wide areas and then use it. Getting players into the box to attack crosses is essential to success. At the same time we need to have players ready to react to any breakdown, or support a player that can't go forward and lock us into the final third.

(Clip is from FIFA Training Center- interesting place with lots of good camera angles.)

Working against the flow

Cleaning up the rebounds or broken balls out into the white zone outside the box by pivoting backwards invites the back 4 out after the ball and then the quick turn for the through ball develops a good crossing position. Players attacking front, back and pen spot can rotate from original runs to create confusion in box.
